Spindle Oilers, Wicks and Springs:
The 405 has a slot across the inside top of the bearings with an oil hole in the center. These slots measure 3/16 wide by 3/32 deep. A company on the Web. DURO FELT PRODUCTS #6 WHITE ASPEN CT. LITTLE ROCK AR 72212. They sell a round felt product designed as oil wicks for old overhead fans. It fits perfectly in my slots. The part # was WICKS 3/16 diameter x 36 " long.

The oilgroove in the Model 82 headstock bearing measures .110 wide by .065 deep, so in my case, a 1/8" wick is probably more likely to give satisfaction.

Gitts Oilers- 9 inch workshop:
The "L" type oilers are threaded. These are in the headstock and the apron (around the clutch star knob). The others oilers are pressed in. The original Gits Bros. numbers for the "L" type is 1218 but these have been discontinued. The substitute is 1204. The oilers on the gearbox and the horizontal drive are Gits Bros. 330 but 302's work well too. The other oiler on the apron (next to the hand wheel) is Gits Bros. 301 but this is discontinued. I think the 300 will fit and is a close replacement. You can look them up and order them from Gits at the link below.

You can also order some of the Gits oilers from McMaster-Carr Supply Co.

The wicks are just the spring loaded ones in wells under the spindle. No other packing is in there. The wicks are composed of a two type felt: dense felt in contact with the spindle and a less dense fiber section that is inside the spring. The oil recommendation for the spindle is a 100 SUS @ 100 Deg. F. This works out to ISO 22 spindle oil. I use Mobil Velocite #10 Spindle Oil in my spindle. It is available from many sources including MSC and McMaster-Carr. While you have it apart, remove the oilers and flush out the wells.
Also, after you have your spindle back together, check the spindle to bearing clearances. They should be:
.0007 to .0010" for Bronze Bearing Spindles,
.0010 to .0015" for Cast Iron Bearing Spindles.
You measure this buy mounting a dial indicator so that the tip of the indicator touches the top of the spindle on the register (the unthreaded section next to the shoulder). Insert a soft metal bar into the spindle (a broom handle will work too). Press down with about 75 lbs. of force and note the reading on the dial. Then pull up on the bar with about 75 lbs. of force and record the difference between the two readings. This determines your spindle clearance. You should check both the front and the rear spindle bearing clearances.
