I acquired an old SB lathe last week from a gentleman who's downsizing and moving to a retirement home. I'm in the process of cleaning and setting it up in my basement and will post pictures once I have it running. I believe it is an 11" swing 5' bed standard geared screw feed type lathe, S/N 1119, which according to the database info I found on this site, was probably manufactured sometime in 1911 and therefore is 100 years old! It was set up and in running condition at the previous owner's basement using a countershaft powered with a VFD driven 2 HP 3-phase TEFC modern motor. The lathe is in an amazing condition for its age with little to almost no corrosion, except on some of the accessories, and nice patina on all exposed metal surfaces. It came with numerous accessories, including tooling, chucks, bits, steady rest (with a break in the casting), screw cutting change gears, etc. It is extremely heavy and therefore had to be broken down into smaller pieces before it could be moved. I don't think that full restoration will be necessary at this point, only clean up, but time will tell. I'm looking forward to interacting with the group and learning metal turning as I am a newbie just starting out. I have done almost everything else, i.e. woodworking, auto repair, electrical (EE by trade for the last 33 years) so hopefully I can grasp and enjoy this new skill.
